What are Tics and What is Tourette's Syndrome?
Tics are sudden, repetitive movements or sounds that individuals with tic disorders experience. These involuntary tics can be classified into two types: motor tics (involving movement) and vocal tics (involving sounds or speech). Tic Disorders can involve one or more motor or vocal tics. Tourette's Syndrome is characterized by the presence of both motor and vocal tics, and lasts for at least one year, with onset in childhood or adolescence.
What are Some Examples of Tics:
Tics can vary in type, frequency, and severity. Some examples of motor tics include eye blinking, facial grimacing, head jerking, shoulder shrugging, or limb movements. Vocal tics can manifest as throat clearing, grunting, sniffing, or repetitive speech patterns. Tics can range from mild to severe, and they can differ from person to person.
Treatment for Tics
Dr. Charissa Chamorro offers evidence-based therapies to effectively manage tic disorders and improve the quality of life for individuals experiencing tics.
Habit Reversal Training (HRT) for Tics
HRT is a well-established behavioral therapy for tic disorders. It involves increasing awareness of tics, identifying premonitory sensations that precede tics, and learning alternative, competing responses to replace the tics. By engaging in competing responses and using other effective coping strategies, individuals can reduce the frequency and intensity of tics over time.
Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT)
CBIT is a structured therapy that combines various behavioral techniques to address tic disorders. It incorporates elements of HRT, education about tics, relaxation training, and functional interventions. CBIT helps individuals gain control over their tics by identifying triggers, managing stress, and developing strategies to redirect the urges and reduce anxiety.
